How to Develop Your Adventist Youth Honor

There are some things you need to know about developing a new AY Honor. If you own the GC Honors Handbook, for 2001 or later, you should find up-to-date instructions at the end of the book. You may develop honors for use within your own club. I do recommended, however, that you still follow the guidelines in this manual, as the goal of an AY Honor is to teach a useful skill or educate, while keeping the moral value of Christian practice at the center. Below is a list of those items that you should consider, as well as suggested means for evaluating your honor. The following is based on the General Conference Guidelines.

Developing and Evaluating Your Honor
General Conference Guidelines
  1. All requirements uphold the basic standards and philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
  2. Requirements include a balance of theory and "hands on" experience.
  3. If possible, requirements have been developed in the areas of Basic and Advanced. Having earned the Basic Honor should be the pre-requisite for earning the Advanced Honor in a given subject.
  4. Requirements are usable in a group setting or by a single individual.
  5. Requirements can be fully completed in less than three months.
  6. Requirements clearly state in simple terminology exactly what is to be accomplished. Avoid ambiguous words or phrases such as: explain briefly, submit, explain orally, or demonstrate ability.
  7. Activity requirements of extended time are worked so as to avoid conflicts with school or work schedules: (example a four day campout could be done in two weekends).
  8. Requirements avoid destruction of animal or plant life. Ask for photos or drawings as opposed to collections.
  9. Requirements avoid involvement in armed or unarmed defense.
  10. Requirements can be accomplished without unduly affecting the safety of the participants.
These are the requirements set fourth by the General Conference with only some minor grammar changes.

For more information, please download the "General Conference Honor Development Guidelines" packet, as well as other resources, available HERE. Although some of us may find it difficult to understand the reasoning behind some of the guidelines given, please keep in mind that these are prepared with many nations and the safety of millions of potential participants in mind. Prudence and careful planning will help you successfully develop new fun-filled honors, so do not be afraid to give it a shot.
